Intel has recently announced that the company has signed an agreement with Telmap to acquire the latter, as the Santa Clara chip giant is trying to grow its influence in the the software and services area.

Telmap is a company specialized in developing end-to-end mobile location-based services that include the Mobile Location Companion.

Furthermore, the company is also the selected location solution provider for companies such as Orange FT Group, Vodafone, Vodacom, SFR, Telefonica-O2, MTS, SingTel, OPTUS and others.

"Telmap delivers great multi-platform consumer experiences every day, and we’re looking forward to combining that focus and excellence with Intel’s to significantly grow their business,” said Piter Biddle, General Manager of AppUp Products and Services (APS) at Intel Corporation.

“But Telmap isn’t just a great consumer service provider – with Telmap we can directly provide developers with location-based services spanning devices, operating systems and CPU architectures,” concluded the company's rep.

According to Intel's press release, Telmap will allow the chip maker to provide AppUp developers with differentiated location capabilities in the form of a standard set of location-based APIs and software that developers can easily integrate into their AppUp apps.

“This is a significant step towards the Intel AppUp services vision we spoke about," added Biddle.

For those of you that don't remember, the Intel AppUp Center is an online application store (in some ways similar with Apple's App Store or Google's Android Market) which provides applications for Microsoft Windows and MeeGo based notebooks, tablets and desktop PCs.

The terms of the deal haven't been disclosed, but Telmap will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel and will continue to serve its existing customers.

The two companies have been discussing this acquisition since the 2011 edition of the Mobile World Congress, which took place in Barcelona, Spain in mid-February. (via Xbit Labs)
