What we know

Killzone 3 is shaping up to be one of the most important PlayStation 3 exclusive titles of the year, as the game will be arriving not only with support for full stereoscopic 3D, but is also compatible with the brand new PlayStation Move motion detection system.

The title aims at polishing the experience of Killzone 2, the previous PlayStation 3 iteration in the shooter franchise, as well as showcase the technologies mentioned above.

But while that's all fine and dandy if you paid a few thousand dollars for a 3DTV and a few hundred for the PlayStation Move and even a gun peripheral, Killzone 3 wants to be more than just a glorified tech demo.

The game will continue the saga of the Helghast war, with the two heroes from the previous game, Sev and Rico, trying to escape the chaos that ensues right after the end of that title.

Guerrilla Games, the developer of the series, has revealed that it wants to seriously upgrade the story of the franchise, and promised that, while it would still portray a meaningful experience, the overall tone would be a bit more lighthearted than the dark Killzone 2.

Quite a few new features will be added on top of Killzone 2 for this new title, including the ability to use jet packs, as seen in the PSP exclusive Killzone: Liberation.

Why it matters

Killzone 3 is among the few hardcore first-person shooter franchises exclusive to the PlayStation 3, so it's very important for Sony to have a presence in a profitable genre with so many fans in order to rival Microsoft's Halo or Gears of War franchises.

Also, while it may not be just a technical demo for 3D or Move, Killzone 3 will be instrumental in making hardcore PlayStation 3 owners think about upgrading to these new technologies, thus increasing the install base for both of them.

Killzone 3 is set to be launched on February 22, in North America, and one day later in Europe, exclusively for the PlayStation 3.
