Once again, it seems that the term hybrid is taking on a new meaning, or at least the list of hybrid IT products has grown by one, now that Icy Dock as officially introduced its latest invention.

So far, there have been more than one attempts on the part of IT companies to make hard disk drives and solid state drives work together.

Ultimately, one of the more convenient solutions was to somehow have the PC look at a HDD-SSD duo as a single partition.

Thus, the data would initially be written quickly onto the SSD, and the frequently used files kept on said component, leaving it to the product to automatically transfer older files to the platter-spinning part.

Turns out that Icy Dock wanted to offer something that could accomplish this with any 2.5-inch solid state drive and 3.5-inch hard disk drive.

More specifically, the MB882HX-1SB 2.5-inch SATA SSD Xpander Hybrid Adapter, as its latest invention is named, can combine one of each via the outfits' own technology.

Both previous-generation and current-generation 2.5-inch solid state drives are supported, while the HDD can be a mainstream or high-end version.

The purpose of the box-like contraption is, then, to divide the total space into a “hybrid partition” and “storage partition.”

Virtually speaking, the former doubles the SSD capacity, while the latter incorporates all the remaining space on the HDD. All in all, the HDD transfer rate should be more or less doubled for both reading and writing.

Unfortunately, there is a certain drawback to the newcomer, in the way that, if either the SSD or the HDD fails, the data on both is completely lost, so prospective buyers might want to look into the subject of RAID protected archive drives.

Finally, as far as design goes, airflow vents, and a screw-less design, along with universal mounting holes and the regular, HDD-like 3.5-inch adapter, make the Xpander Hybrid Adapter easy to implement.
