The SandForce series of solid state drive controller processors has shown up in many an SSD over the past couple of years and has now landed inside the newest such devices from Patriot.

When the new generation of SandForce controllers came, the one with support for the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface standard, it was to be expected that makers of storage devices would quickly get to work.

Among other things, the OCZ Deneva 2, OWC Mercury Electra 6G and the Super Talent TeraDrive have adopted them.

As such, that Patriot Memory would also develop some solid state drives based on them is not a surprise in the slightest.

The series is known as Wildfire and use the SandForce SF-2200 chip, leading to read and write speeds of 555 MHz and 520 MHz, respectively.

"We are happy to see Patriot Memory is expanding their current SandForce Driven product line with the new SandForce SF-2200 client SSD Processors," said Kent Smith, sr. director of Product Marketing of SandForce.

"Patriot has won numerous awards and we anticipate they will win even more with our latest generation 6.0 Gb/s client processor."

The company offers storage capacities of 120 GB and 240 GB, although a 480 GB model should also be completed soon.

4k random write IOPS can go as high as 85,000 and, naturally, the TRIM command is fully supported, making sure that performance does not degrade over time.

"The Patriot Wildfire is the fastest SSD drive we have ever released," says William Lai, Patriot Memory's product manager.

"Although we are a bit late to market, we wanted to ensure that the technology was rock-solid. We are confident with the latest firmware, Patriot’s reputation for quality and performance stand second-to-none."

Unfortunately, the official press release had no information on how much it costs to acquire one of these SATA 6.0 Gbps storage devices.
