Samsung managed to shake up the smartphone market last year with its Galaxy S devices, and it seems that they can now breathe new life, courtesy of CyanogenMod 9 ROMs headed their way.

Based on the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform, CM9 is advancing fast and should become available as a final release in the not-too-distant feature.

Although nothing has been officially announced on this, we do know that the development process is moving along nicely for some devices, including the Galaxy S GT I9000 from Samsung.

The latest Build of CyanogenMod 9 for the mobile phone, namely Build Version 8, is already here, and there is some great news for enthusiasts who are looking into new ways to tweak their devices.

The new release brings along updated functionality and increased stability, though there is still a long way ahead before the final release lands, it seems.

According to the latest reports on the matter, the latest Build of CM9 for Galaxy S brings the following changes:

- USB Tethering now works smoothly, - Wi Fi tethering still have some minor issues as it disconnects after sometime, - T9 Dialing is enabled and Dialer Settings now has been configured, - External SD Card can be mounted, - Cannot accept all file types via Bluetooth, - Support for TV Out has been configured, - Data activity icon sometimes gets stuck even data is off, - Persistent “Removed SD card” message on external sd card removal.

Of course, there is also the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system that users can now take advantage of, which is currently loaded only on the new Galaxy Nexus, officially.

With Google releasing the Android 4.0 code to the world several weeks ago, it was only a matter of time before custom ROMs started to emerge, and Galaxy S users are among those who can now try such a solution.

Just keep in mind that this is not an official release, and that you will have to temper with the handset to install it.
