The Chronic Dev Team’s Greenpois0n jailbreak tool is out for those looking to get Cydia installed on their devices, as well as support for unapproved third-party applications. This concise tutorial includes the necessary steps to jailbreak a device running iOS 4.1, but should not be regarded as an encouragement to do so.

Basically, the steps are pretty much the same as with Limera1n, the surprise-jailbreak tool handed by geohot to the iOS community earlier this week.

(To jailbreak using Limera1n, refer to this tutorial.)

The move was not received with positive thoughts by everyone involved with iOS jailbreaking, as it forced Chronic to break their ETA for releasing Greenpois0n, but the software itself was more than welcome.

Now, Greenpois0n is also available and ready to jailbreak any iPhone 4, iPhone 3G S, iPod touch (4th Generation,  iPod touch (3rd Generation), and iPad. Greenpois0n only supports iOS 4.1 for now.

Without further ado, here are the steps to achieve a jailbreak using Greenpois0n on iOS 4.1

1. Download greenpois0n

2. Launch the application on your WIndows, or Linux PC (Mac version coming soon)

3. Turn off your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad

4. Connect the device to your computer

5. Click on “Prepare to Jailbreak (DFU)” and follow the timely steps to put the device into DFU mode. If you don’t succeed at first, you can repeat this step over and over again until you get it righ.

6. Step six requires that you are in DFU mode. If so, Greenpois0n will show the ‘Jailbreak!’ button. Press it to start the jailbreak process.

7. At this point, all you do is wait for the jailbreak to complete. Although the status bar will indicate that the jailbreak is ready, Greenpois0n may still be at work on your device, so allow the iPhone to reboot by itself

8. Once rebooted, look for the newly-installed “Loader” icon on your device’s home screen and tap on it

9. You will be offered the option to install Cydia. Tap on Cydia to install it.

10. At this point, “Loader” is no longer needed, so you can access it once more and tap “Remove” to uninstall it. Your device will reboot once more.

You are now Jailbroken!

Softpedia doesn't encourage jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV, or any other device.

This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device.

Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device.

If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
