The next Hitman game has been officially confirmed by developer IO Interactive and publisher Square Enix, in the form of Hitman Absolution.

There were rumors about a new Hitman game for quite some time now, but only recently did its developer start a teaser campaign which hinted at a new title.

As you can imagine, fans immediately began to speculate about the new Hitman title and what new adventures the protagonist of the franchise, Agent 47, will go through.

Now, the two companies have finally decided to reveal the new game, Hitman Absolution, and the first details which have been showcased alongside a teaser video for it.

According to the description of the game's YouTube page, "Hitman Absolution follows Agent 47, a cold blooded assassin, who takes on his most dangerous contract to date."

"Betrayed by those he trusted and hunted by the police, he finds himself at the centre of a dark conspiracy and must embark on a personal journey through a corrupt and twisted world, in his search for the truth."

The teaser video depicts Agent 47 preparing his silenced pistol, no doubt before a mission, but not much else.

IO Interactive updated its Twitter feed to say that more details are set to arrive later today, so fans of the Hitman franchise should stay tuned for plenty of other details about Absolution and what new things it will bring.

The Hitman series became extremely popular because of its original stories and the stealth-based gameplay, giving Ubisoft's Splinter Cell or Konami's Metal Gear Solid franchises a run for their money.

With the advent of the current console generation, the franchise remained dormant, as IO Interactive focused on the lackluster Kane & Lynch franchise, developing two titles for it.

Now, it seems that Agent 47 is back and better than ever in Hitman Absolution.
