The gaming industry is one of the most peculiar branches of entertainment, as it really depends on gamers’ tastes to be successful. People dictate which genres are popular, what sells and what doesn't, thus sealing the fate of quite a lot of companies and video games.

That's why innovation is one of the most important things in gaming. In order to attract people, you must first be able to think outside the box and create something completely new that will awake gamers’ interest.

While a lot of companies brag about the innovation that they bring to the whole industry, sometimes that isn't really the case. Fast Company, a business magazine, has decided to chart the most innovative companies of last year, highlighting their best achievements, which granted them popularity and huge sales.

As some of you might have figured out, Nintendo is number one, with its popularity and huge sales despite the tough economic climate making it the best choice. Ubisoft is the runner up, as the business magazine applauded its new franchises, Shaun White Snowboarding and Tom Clancy's Endwar, with Blizzard landing on the third place of the podium, due to its record breaking Wrath of the Lich King.

Here's the full list of companies that brought innovation to the whole industry:

1. Nintendo 2. Ubisoft 3. Blizzard 4. Media Molecule 5. Harmonix 6. GarageGames 7. Take Two Interactive 8. Microsoft 9. Greystripe 10. RealNetworks.

While a lot of people may argue that some companies shouldn’t have been there, it seems that profit and innovation were the deciding factors on which companies reached the top ten. Hopefully, we'll get to see more new things coming to gaming in the near future.
