Fastest selling game in history

World of Warcraft is a hugely popular game, with over 11 million paying subscribers and a fanbase that greatly exceeds that number. Blizzard's hit MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) dominates the market and sets a hard to achieve benchmark for other games that can't really appeal to gamers in the same way that WoW can.

We have just seen the launch of the second expansion of the title, Wrath of The Lich King, which made a huge number of players get out of their homes and brave the cold, wind and rain just so they can get their hands on the game when it was launched, at midnight, across the world. We even reported on such a launch in our country, with people bravely fighting a cold November night just so they could enter the mythical land of Northrend as soon as possible.

Up until now, we could only guess as to how many copies were sold during the first 24 hours, as no statistics were offered, but now it seems that Blizzard has finished gathering the data and announced that Wrath of the Lich King sold over 2.8 million copies, which makes it the fastest selling PC game in history, beating the former leader, the first expansion pack of WoW, The Burning Crusade.

"We're grateful for the incredible support that players around the world have continued to show for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Wrath of the Lich King contains some of the best content we've created for the game so far, and we look forward to seeing even more players log in to experience it in the days ahead."

Some very interesting but in some way expected news, as you can certainly imagine that Blizzard is one of the happiest companies these days, making a monster profit with this expansion, and the money will keep on coming, as players pay the monthly subscription fee in order to keep their accounts.
