Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has recently released a new software update for one of its most popular handsets launched on the market last year, the HTC HD2. The new firmware upgrade, available for handsets with ROM versions less than or equal to 1.72.XXX.X, is meant only for the HTC HD2 units on O2's airwaves in the UK.

“This update for HTC HD2 allows for Adding UMTS900 Band for HD2 O2 branded,” the leading handset vendor states on its support website. “This update is suitable for ROM versions less than or equal to 1.72.XXX.X,” the mobile phone maker also notes there. The solution emerges about one week after HTC pushed a ROM upgrade for HD2 at O2.

In order to install the software update, users would need to have the device connected to a Windows-based PC via an USB cable. Moreover, they would have to have Microsoft ActiveSync installed in case the computer runs under Windows XP, Windows Mobile Device Center installed in case the machine runs under Windows Vista (or Windows 7). HTC HD2, which runs under Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, would then have to be synchronized with the computer. All that users would have to do afterwards would be to download the upgrade from HTC's website, copy it to the handset, double tap it and then follow the instructions on the screen. The file comes under the name of “LEO08830.exe,” and weighs around 30kb.

The new software solution for HTC HD2 at O2 is available for download from HTC's support website here. Unfortunately, the handset vendor does not say whether other enhancements have been also included in the package. The installation of this update should not affect the files on the device, but users should consider performing a backup of all important info on the mobile phone, including contacts, messages, emails, apps, settings and the like, just to make sure that nothing is lost during the process.
