Via the HTC Developer Center

Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has just made available for download, on its HTC Developer Center website, the source code for the HTC DROID ERIS available for purchase at the moment via Verizon Wireless in the US. The handset, as most of you should know already, runs under Google's Android operating system, and has been launched on the market at the beginning of November, along with Motorola DROID, the first Android phone at Verizon.

The release of the kernel source code for the DROID ERIS available via Verizon follows shortly after the release of source code for other two handsets the company already launched on the market, namely the HTC Tattoo and the HTC Hero, available via Sprint. The kernel source for the original Hero was delivered to developers back in October 2009, yet the Sprint model is different from the original, and now both of them are available.

It's a common fact that HTC provides developers with the kernel source code and binaries for its Android handsets, in a move aimed at offering them the possibility to build applications much easier. “The HTC Developer Center is a place for developers to obtain essential resources to help you in developing great applications on HTC's Android and Windows Mobile phones,” is what the company notes on its website. All of the company's Android phones are listed there, so that a developer can download whichever source code is needed.

The new download weighs in at 63.7 MB, which means that it should take only a couple of minutes to complete. Hackers and those interested into cooked ROMs have now yet another reason to rejoice, as they can currently come up with solutions based on Verizon's DROID ERIS, which is another flavor of Hero in the end. However, the device does not run under the latest Android version out there, though the software update might not be too far in the future.

The kernel source code for the HTC DROID ERIS can be found on HTC's website here.
