Wireless carrier Vodafone UK is reportedly gearing up for the launch of a new Android-based mobile phone, namely the HTC Legend, which was unveiled officially during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona about two weeks ago. Vodafone will become the first operator to launch the new device in the country, and has just announced the price tag of the phone on its airwaves.

It seems that the mobile phone carrier is set to make the new handset available for as low as possible, and it will have it available for its users for only £1.99, though the signing of a contract agreement on a £25 per month price plan is one of the requirements. However, the device won't come alone in these conditions, as the plan will also offer 300 minutes a month and unlimited texts, as well as three months free insurance.

Other options will also be available when it comes to purchasing the HTC Legend from Vodafone, including the £35 per month tariff, which brings along 600 minutes and unlimited texts, and will deliver the device for free. According to pocket-lint, Vodafone is set to make the new device available for purchase before the end of the month, yet previous reports suggested that it wouldn't hit the shelves until April.

The new Android handset from HTC comes with a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen display that boasts an HVGA resolution, includes a 5-megapixel photo snapper with LED flash and auto focus on the back, as well as a 3.5mm headset jack, HSPA, Wi-Fi connectivity options, built-in GPS receiver, accelerometer and optical trackpad.

The Legend is powered by the Android 2.1 flavor of Google's mobile operating system, and also sports an aluminum casing made from a single piece, which gives it a unique form factor. The handset will arrive on the UK market at Vodafone around the same time as another Android-based device from HTC, the Nexus One, and it should be rather interesting to see how they will go along on the market.
