Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC Corporation recently acknowledged that the HTC Desire smartphone delivered to Australia came with some issues affecting its GPS functionality. On Friday, only a few days after the original announcement, the company released a software update for the HTC Desire in Australia, offering Telstra customers the possibility to take advantage of the GPS capabilities of their devices.

According to HTC, Telstra customers can install the new firmware on their handsets either OTA or from its website. “Firmware over the air (FOTA). A notification will appear on the Telstra variant HTC Desire smartphones advising the customer an update is available. Customers can then choose to install this update over their mobile network or over Wi-Fi (it is recommended that customers travelling outside Australia use a Wi-Fi hotspot). The update will be unmetered for Telstra customers who download the update via the Next G network in Australia. Customers will receive step-by-step installation instructions with the notification,” the company states.

As for the second option, the handset vendor says that users should head over to its website (htc.com/au), where they will find the update available for download as a new ROM for the Desire. Weighing in at around 150MB, the file can be downloaded on a PC, from where users can install it on the handset via a USB cable. Those willing to try this option should back up all files on the phone before launching the process, for the update will erase all data on the device, and important info might be lost.

Additionally, the handset vendor announced that the new software update for HTC Desire in Australia was packed with additional features too. Thus, users will enjoy voice search on their handsets as soon as the new firmware is installed on the device, a capability that will enable them to use voice commands to seek information on the Internet faster. “The voice search feature is integrated within the search functions on the device and can be activated by pressing the microphone button next to the search box,” HTC concludes.
