The highly-popular Android-based HTC Desire is now available for purchase in the United States too, via wireless carrier U.S. Cellular.

According to the operator, starting today, its customers are able to purchase the new handset from its stores and online on its website.

Through this release, U.S. Cellular becomes the first wireless services provider in the country to add the high-end smartphone to its offering.

“The buzz for the HTC Desire has been amazing,” said Edward Perez, vice president of sales and marketing operations for U.S. Cellular. “Our customers deserve great phones, and now they can be among the first to own one of the best Android-powered devices on the market.”

With the launch of HTC Desire, U.S. Cellular's smartphone lineup just got a little bigger, and should be expanded even more with the addition of more Android-based devices later during the ongoing year.

A total number of five Android devices should be launched by this carrier in 2010, including the already available Samsung Acclaim and HTC Desire.

According U.S. Cellular, we should see it releasing the Samsung Galaxy S sometime in October, followed by two new LG Android-based devices later this year.

“For U.S. Cellular customers, the HTC Desire smartphone also comes with the company's industry-first, customer-focused programs, like Overage Protection and Battery Swap,” the company announced.

The new HTC Desire smartphone was made available for purchase with a price tag of $199.95 attached to it, with the signing of a two-year contract agreement and a $70 mail-in rebate required.

Sporting a 3.7-inch Super LCD touchscreen display, the HTC Desire runs under Google's Android 2.1 OS, while boasting a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, along with support for 3G networks, integrated GPS and Wi-Fi capability.

Google services like Gmail, Google Maps and Google Talk instant messaging are included with the device, as well as U.S. Cellular applications like My Contacts Backup, City ID, Tone Room Deluxe and Your Navigator Deluxe.
