Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC announced on Tuesday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the launch of a long rumored device, the HTC Desire, which runs under Google's Android 2.1 operating system. The handset comes as an upgraded version of Nexus One, boasts an impressive touchscreen display, and also includes a new solution from its maker, the enhanced HTC Sense, something that was not available on the device launched via Google's own web store.

But that's not all when it comes to the specifications list of the new mobile phone, set to arrive on the market in April. Users will also enjoy its 1 GHz application processor, as well as 512 MB or ROM and 576 MB of RAM it packs inside, not to mention that it includes a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32 GB. Moreover, the 3.7 inches AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with pinch-to-zoom capability and a 480 x 800 pixel (WVGA) resolution is also there to improve the overall aspect of HTC Desire.

On the connectivity side, the handset packs support for HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz and GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz frequencies for Europe and Asia, along with EDGE, GPRS and 3G (up to 7.2 Mbps download speed) capabilities, not to mention Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 b/g) functionality, Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate, a USB port, and a 3.5 mm stereo audio jack, as well as a GPS receiver.

A 5-megapixel photo snapper with face detection, geotagging, auto focus, video recording and flash is also present with the device, along with G-Sensor, Digital compass, Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, and a 1400 mAh rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that can deliver up to 400 minutes of talk time on GSM (up to 390 minutes on WCDMA) or up to 340 hours of standby time on GSM (up to 360 hours on WCDMA).

The new HTC Desire comes with a nice range of features and applications too, starting with the new HTC Sense experience, and continuing with HTC Widgets, Facebook integration, Friend Stream, HTC Peep for twittering, FM Radio, multimedia capabilities, or the support for Google Maps, and HTC Footprint. Web connectivity, messaging capabilities including IM, MMS, SMS or Email are also there, and other more.

The guys over at Android Central managed to put their hands on the phone at MWC, and came up with some hands-on photos for your viewing pleasure, as well as with a video of the device into the wild.
