The first WM 6.1 handsets to receive it

Redmond-based software giant Microsoft launched the latest flavor of its mobile operating system, namely Windows Mobile 6.5, at the beginning of last week, and handset makers all around the world already announced plans to update some of their existing WM-powered devices to it. Among them, HTC, the largest Windows Mobile phone maker, said that it would update three handsets to the new OS, and it already provided new ROMs for two of the phones, Touch Pro2 and Snap.

The update for HTC Touch Pro2 is now available on the phone maker's website in the form of ROM version 1.86.401.0, while the one for Snap is ROM version 2.03.405.2. The company also announced that these handsets would come to the market with the new OS installed on them right from the start, and the updates were only meant for those who already bought the phones with Windows Mobile 6.1 on them.

“Before you proceed, please confirm that this software upgrade is a newer version than what is currently installed on your device. If it is the same version and your device is operating normally, there is no need to reinstall the software. To check what version is installed on your device, click Start > Settings > System tab > Device Information > Version tab, and note the ROM version, CPU, and Radio version,” is what the company says to those willing to perform the update.

It should also be mentioned that this is only a generic software update and that users will lose any software or settings that were delivered to them by their mobile phone carrier. Moreover, they should also be aware of the fact that the update process will erase all data on their handsets, which means that they should consider performing a backup of all their personal files, settings and applications before starting the update. The company also notes that the process is irreversible.
