The rhythm of a real guitar

One of the more unusual offerings at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco was from a company called Game Tank. Their take on the whole Guitar Hero craze pushes the idea of the rhythm game one step further. Yup, Game Tank lets you use a real guitar for a Guitar Hero-like game.

Their design is called Guitar Rising and it allows the player to plug into it a real guitar and start playing all those old rock classics, like the Steve Vai wannabes we all are. The developers claim that any electric guitar can be used for the game and that they have done intensive testing to get all of the guitars working just right in the game. Their song list currently stands at about 45 songs and they claim that almost all guitar driven tracks can be adapted to the game they are developing. The initial game will only ship with 30 songs, but more will be made available at a later time.

Guitar Rising is not meant only for professional guitar players. There are several game difficulty options that will allow the player to customize the experience to their level of knowledge and skill. Beginner skill level is so easy that you can play even if you've never touched a real guitar in your life. Expert is hard enough to make experienced guitar players feel a challenge, as it forces the player to touch all the notes of the song.

The developers say that they created the game for two purposes. First, they want to see it used as a learning tool by those not experienced enough in guitar playing. And they also want to appeal to those Guitar Hero players that are not really having the fun of their lives using their fake plastic instrument and would like to experience something closer to the real deal.

How the experience feels we are sure to find out when Guitar Rising comes out later this year on the PC. Till then, have a look at the video below:
