Google Maps arrived on Android with 3D buildings sometime in December last year, but only with support for a small number of cities, now expanded to offer the appealing feature to even more users than before.

As soon as Google Maps 5.0 for Android arrived on devices, users had the possibility to easily rotate or zoom in and out of 3D maps, enjoying a great experience on the maps on their mobile phones.

Starting today, the list of cities in which users can access 3D buildings in Google Maps has been expanded, so that more of them will benefit from the said experience while on the go.

“Last December, the release of Google Maps 5.0 for Android ushered in the next-generation of mobile maps where you can rotate, tilt, and zoom in and out of 3D maps,” Brian Brewington, software engineer, Google, notes in a recent blog post.

“Whether you’re on the go or playing with a new phone, seeing a 3D skyline spring up in New York City, Zurich, Milan, and other cities is a helpful, fun, and unique experience--an experience we want as many of you as we can to have for your city.”

The new maps now offer support for 3D buildings in cities like: London, Paris, Barcelona, Stockholm, Singapore, Lisbon, and Boulder, as well as in a number of 11 major cities in South Africa.

To benefit from the new feature, users won't even have to update the Google Maps application on their devices.

As soon as the software is fired up on any device that runs under Android 2.1 or newer OS flavor, users will be able to zoom in to a city with 3D buildings, the said blog post explains.

Those who do not have the latest flavor of Google Maps installed on their devices will be able to download it from the Android Market here.
