One of the major aims of the development team working on the upcoming God of War: Ascension is to make main character Kratos somewhat more relatable and likeable, especially after his actions in the last installments of the series.

Todd Papy, who is the director working on God of War: Ascension, has told Game Informer that, “And that was something I wanted to get across.”

He added, “The whole idea behind the story is more, ‘how do you undo selling your soul to the devil?’ In essence, that is the question that we are answering in this story. Where does Kratos pick up roughly six months to a year after he killed his wife and kid? What’s his mental state? It’s not a very pleasant one.”

Papy says that the ruthless nature of Kratos will remain, but the player will have a chance to see why he acts this way and will be able to understand how a human being gets the drive and then the ability to exact his revenge upon the gods and their allies.

God of War: Ascension is a prequel to the rest of the series and Sony Santa Monica, the studio handling the development of the game, has already revealed that the single-player story will show exactly how Kratos takes his first steps towards his revenge.

The game will also introduce multiplayer to the series for the first time, allowing players to team up with others in order to battle in arenas inspired by the best stages of the series.

I played the multiplayer during E3 2012 and it was one of the best experiences I had during the trade show.

God of War: Ascension will be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 3 from Sony during the spring of 2013 and will likely be the last game in the series for the current generation of consoles.
