Team will refrain from putting themselves in position to be criticized

Despite the focus on violence that has always been part of the God of War series, the team working on the next installment, Ascension, will be careful about how the theme is approached and try to avoid situations like violence against women.

David Hewitt, the design manager working at Sony Santa Monica on the new God of War, tells IGN that, “The team has a set of rules that define those sorts of things very clearly. Where it shows itself is how the combat designers and animators have designed Kratos’ moves.”

“He’s always leaning forward, he’s always moving forward. He’s seeking revenge and he’s after his ultimate objective and he will tear through enemies – rip them in half – as quickly as he can,” he goes on to say.

He further adds, “But there’s not a lot of flourishes, there’s not any kind of enjoying the moment. There’s nothing about this that he’s enjoying.”

The developer would not talk directly about the situation where the team was thinking about violence against a woman character.

Despite the fact that the team is toning down some elements of the game, Hewitt promises that gamers will have a lot of moments in God of War: Ascension when they react strongly to what Kratos does on screen.

God of War is one of the core series of the PlayStation brand of home consoles and the new game is the first in the series to introduce multiplayer.

Players will be able to create their own characters and then fight others, individually or as a team, on a number of battle spaces based on the most interesting levels in the franchise.

Ascension will also have a single-player component set before the events of the other titles in the series.

God of War: Ascension is set to be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 3 home console from Sony in early 2013.
