Desire Z, the side-slider that HTC launched on the market in late 2010 with Google's Android operating system on board, is expected to receive an update to a newer OS flavor in the near future. According to a recent post on HTC Romania's Facebook account, the handset should be upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in the coming weeks.

According to them, HTC has already concluded the testing of this new software update for the mobile phone, and is preparing to start the roll-out in the very near future.

“Thanks to all who inquired on the Gingerbread upgrade for Desire Z. We are in final stages of testing and plan to start distribution of this update in the coming weeks,” a rough translation of HTC's post reads.

“It is possible that the update will see delays depending on each network, but it should be available for all users in the end.”

The Gingerbread update for Desire Z arrives at the same time with the OS upgrade HTC is readying for the original Desire smartphone.

Recently, the handset vendor announced that HTC Desire owners out there should be receiving the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS before the end of July, without the HTC Sense UI loaded on top. Earlier this year, the company started upgrading the Desire HD to Gingerbread.

What was not specified was whether HTC Desire Z would taste the original Gingerbread OS flavor, or a newer iteration of this specific platform release.

Following the launch of Android 2.3 Gingerbread in December last year, Google made available new versions of the OS, with Android 2.3.4 being the latest iteration available on devices.

Since various mobile phones already tasted the latest OS flavor into the wild, or a build closer to this OS version, such as Android 2.3.3, chances are that HTC would aim at releasing this software version for Desire Z as well.
