Cliff Bleszinski, the creator of the Gears of War franchise and Epic Games' creative director, believes the series can easily reach the levels of success of much larger franchises, including Halo or Call of Duty, especially since it's only seen the third installment appear last month.

The Gears of War series started life back in 2006, on the Xbox 360 and, since then, went on to see millions of gamers fall in love with it, despite competing with other, much more impressive shooter franchises and seeing lots of games try to replicate its famous cover-based mechanic.

Now, with the third game already out and reaching impressive sales, its creator, Cliff Bleszinski, has talked about it as a whole and how the Epic Games studio can always improve upon the series and make it even more successful, reaching other established franchises like Halo or Call of Duty.

"We can do better. We can always do better," Bleszinski told Develop magazine. "The number of gamers playing the game online – I’m hoping Gears of War 3 has more than Gears 1 or 2 ever did, especially considering how competitive the market is.You look at the numbers that Call of Duty and Halo pulls and we’re not at that point yet. I’m hoping Gears of War 3 brings us closer to that point. People forgot also that we’re only the third game of the series."

Bleszinski highlights that Halo or Call of Duty saw way more iterations appear and develop the fan base, so perhaps Gears of War 4 or other installments will do the same with his own series, but he still believes the newest one is by far the most impressive, both for existing fans and brand new ones.

"There’s been a couple more Halo’s and a few more Call of Duty’s so who knows, maybe we’ll be able to build upon that success. I want with this game, more so than any other game we’ve ever made, for people to avoid the perception of what the game is. If you haven’t played a Gears game, now please give this one a try. We really do think you’ll like it a lot."

Gears of War 3 is now out exclusively for the Xbox 360 console and the first downloadable content pack has already been announced, in the form of the Horde Command Pack.
