The story-based downloadable content that will be released for Gears of War 3 won't feature already known characters like Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago or Cole Train, instead relying on self-contained adventures with new heroes.

Gears of War 3 has just been released earlier this week across the world, exclusively for the Xbox 360, and already a lot of praise has been piled onto the title from Epic Games, with people praising its story, which closes the trilogy focusing on protagonist Marcus Fenix and his Delta Squad, or the multiplayer mode, which was polished through an online beta earlier this year.

Now, the designer of the series and Epic's creative director, Cliff Bleszinski, has talked with The Telegraph about the possible downloadable content for the game, and how his team is following the strategy of other studios like Rockstar or Gearbox Software, which came out with fresh adventures starring new characters for their recent titles.

"We have some DLC that's coming up. We've confirmed we'll be doing campaign DLC," he said. "One thing I can tell you is that you're not going to see Marcus or Dom or Cole in it. I believe that DLC should be unique and cool, like Lost and the Damned, Gay Tony, Mad Moxie's Underdome Riot. All those kind of things. DLC's the place where you play and have fun. So that's one thing that's an indication of where things may be going in the future."

Epic already tried its hand at story-based DLC back with Gears of War 2, which saw the release of the Dark Corners add-on, allowing players to go through a level that was scrapped from the single-player campaign before the game's actual release.

Grand Theft Auto IV players were extremely pleased with the two add-ons for their game, The Lost and Damned, and The Ballad of Gay Tony, both reaching impressive sales and contributing to the huge sales of the last GTA installment.

Borderlands, which received a wide variety of DLC besides Mad Moxie's Underdome Riot, also went on to impress legions of gamers, many of whom are now eagerly awaiting the sequel from Gearbox Software.

Expect more details about the DLC for Gears of War 3 in the near future.
