The developers at Epic Games working on Gears of War 3 have announced that they will be adding the option for stereoscopic three dimensional gaming for those who have the television sets required, in order to show how the technology can shape future gaming experiences.

Speaking to Eurogamer Rod Fergusson, who is the producer working on Gears of War 3, has said, “We asked, could we do it? It felt like something we wanted to have. It was a feature we didn’t want to be deficient in. When you look at Gears 1, it was what people used to demo HD at the time. It’s still fledgling technology. It’s still a niche feature. But it was something we could support, so we felt, why not?”

He added, “I love the qualities it provides, the window into a world. That’s what the 3D gives you. Having that depth of character, and being able to see that separation from the reticule and the creatures in the background – it’s a different experience but it’s a really good one.”

Playing Gears of War 3 in stereoscopic 3D will diminish the resolution of the game, which will be just under the 720p standard.

This is because the team at Epic that works on the third person shooter has only decided to add support for 3D late in the development process and the game engine was not built from the ground up to accommodate the tech.

Fergusson has also confirmed that Microsoft has been adding more support for 3D in the new Xbox 360 development kits.

Traditionally the console maker has been less than enthusiastic about 3D tech, with Sony taking the lead when it comes to promoting it.

Gears of War 3 is set to be launched exclusively on the Xbox 360 on September 20 of this year.
