This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) was filled with big announcements from almost all of the major companies involved in the gaming industry. But while Nintendo kept its announcements on par, there was one thing that really stood out for almost everyone present at the company's press conference: the Wii Vitality Sensor.

Introduced as a peripheral that would work with the Wii Remote, the new device was only briefly mentioned, but enough to make a lot of people scratch their heads and wonder just how Nintendo would implement this new gadget, which resembles devices used in hospitals, into future video games.

Now, after declaring that it would introduce new things to games and gamers alike, Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Reggie Fils-Aime talks about the Wii Vitality Sensor and how, even though some people mocked and laughed about it, the peripheral will certainly be successful.

“Until you have that software, it's tough to understand,” Fils-Aime says. “If I told you that you would be standing on an oversized bathroom scale, and having fun doing it, you probably would have said, 'Reggie, I don't get it.' And yet here we are with the balance board arguably as the third largest development platform across the globe.”

Reggie also emphasizes the fact that he will introduce gaming to a new type of public, one “who hasn't yet been compelled with the first-person shooter, or an action side-scrolling adventure, or a fitness game.”

Do you really believe that, if given a proper support in the form of intriguing new video games, the Vitality Sensor will be a huge success for Nintendo? Leave us a comment with your thoughts on the interesting peripheral, which will arrive in the Spring of next year.
