At this year’s Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga shocked once more when she walked the white carpet in a dress made entirely of meat – with shoes and other accessories to match. The point is, there are at least 5 outfits that could have been more offensive.

The singer was not criticized just by PETA for her choice in fashion but by many others who deemed her idea of attending an awards ceremony covered in raw meat anything from “gross” to a desperate “cry for attention.”

What people are not saying, E! Online believes, is that this could have turned much worse – if it’s any consolation for those who didn’t appreciate Gaga’s style the other night.

Off the top of the head, E! comes up with five outfits that would have been way more offensive than the raw meat dress – starting with a classic black dress.

Lady Gaga is a diva by all means, the e-zine says, and one of the things she’s mostly known for is her wicked fashion sense that never fails to get people talking.

Had she gone for a classic LBD, which works wonders for most women out there, she would have certainly caused more tongues to wag – for the simple reason she would’ve disappointed by doing something below the standards she set herself.

“A Potato Dress: A meat dress is a tribute to our nation’s abundance of food. A potato dress is an insult to Ireland’s Great Famine, which, yes, ran its course more than 150 years ago, but still... In any case, the sour cream would’ve gotten everywhere. Plus, the carbs! The carbs!” E! notes.

At number three comes an outfit that would have had as accessory Danielle Staub of the “Real Housewives of New Jersey,” the e-zine goes on to say.

Not only is Staub not a favorite with a large chunk of the audience but the mere association between her and Gaga, who always stresses how she’s an artist and not a pop singer, would have been terribly insulting.

“A T-Shirt From the Dove World Outreach Center: We’d directly link to the church’s site, and to its ‘Islam Is of the Devil’ fashions, but we understand pastor Terry Jones disdains the spotlight,” E! says at number 4.

At number 5 comes an outfit that fans already saw on the white carpet at the VMAs: Cher’s tiny, see-through leotard, matched with high leather boots and biker leather jacket.

Not that Cher’s outfit wasn’t cool, E! says: just that you simply can’t match Cher, not even if you’re Gaga.

With all this, the bottom line is that people are making this into something it bigger than it should be: sure, Gaga’s dress was “out of the ordinary,” but it certainly doesn’t warrant the kind of criticism she’s getting.

“We understand PETA defending its turf, but as for the rest of the outrage? So, Gaga wore a butcher’s shop. So, the carpet at the Video Music Awards was white. So, she’s lucky the thing didn’t drip. The point is, it didn’t,” E! also writes.
