The Mass Effect series, created by video game developer BioWare and publisher Electronic Arts, has become big enough to create fans among the Hollywood elite, with actor Freddie Prinze Jr. displaying extensive knowledge of the game when he was selected to play the role of a character in the third installment.

Robyn Théberge, who is the producer working on Mass Effect 3 in charge of sound and video effects and the user interface, talked about one of the voice work actors, saying, “Freddie Prinze, Jr – he’s the voice of James Vega – is a huge Mass Effect fan.

“We were all blown away, we had no idea when he was cast for that role. He walked into the booth and was like ‘Alright, am I a paragon or a renegade? How does it work? How do I fit in with Shepard?’”

She added for VG247 that, “He’s really, really excited to play Shepard alongside James Vega who he did the voice for and we actually did adopt some of the dialogue based off of his delivery because he was so into it and really did a good job of selling that character’s personality.”

James Vega is a new character for Mass Effect 3 and seems cast as the gruff capable soldier that Commander Shepard needs in order to complete his mission of getting the races of the galaxy close ranks and battle the invading Reapers.

The new BioWare experience will be the last one to use the current cast of characters and the Reaper conflict, although the company plans to deliver more games using the same overall universe.

Mass Effect 3 is being launched at the same time on the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC and gamers in North America will be able to play it first, on March 6, with those in Europe getting access to the game on March 9.
