In June this year, the official announcement came that Julia Stiles would officially be a part of Showtime’s killer series, “Dexter” come season 5. We now have the first pictures of her.

For a very long time, producers of the successful series kept the identity and history of Stiles’ character a secret, for reasons that are very easy to understand.

However, so as to not leave fans stranded for good, just two weeks ahead of the season premiere of the series, they released a few shots of the innocent-looking actress on the set.

The first picture comes via Entertainment Weekly, which notes that her hands are all cut up and she’s looking to be on the run. This, of course, begs a lot of questions as to her character.

“Things to note in this photo: Why are her hands cut up? Where is she fleeing to and what’s she running from? And, most importantly, what secret/evil/sociopathic thoughts are hiding behind her too-innocent facial expression?” EW asks.

Earlier before, the same e-zine announced that Stiles would star on the series as Lumen, a “psychologically and physically damaged” woman who crosses paths with Dexter in the fourth or fifth episode of the new season.

One thing that fans can count on so far is that Lumen will not be like Lila from season 2, as producers promised a while back the show will be moving forward and not rehashing what has already been done once.

Two other brand new photos come from ScreenCrave, but they also refuse to divulge the secret behind Stiles’ role – though one of them at least shows Michael C. Hall as Dexter in the background.

The e-zine is also at a loss when it comes to offering more details on the character. Luckily, some sort of insight comes from Stiles herself: not as regards her role but rather her experience with it.

“In a weird way it reminds me of the making of the ‘Bourne’ movies. The script is always changing, so you might shoot a scene and then all of a sudden you are handed pages, and you have to memorize your lines really quickly,” she is quoted as saying.

“It’s like acting in a vacuum a little bit. There’s a different kind of challenge, but part of me really likes it,” the actress further said, as cited by ScreenCrave.

Clearly, given the shocking finale of the previous season, producers are trying to keep most of the details about the plot under wraps.

On the other hand, if they were looking to have fans intrigued, their mission is a real success.

The first episode of season 5 of “Dexter,” called “My Bad,” airs on September 26, 2010.
