After causing serious waves at this year’s Comic-Con, the cast and producers of Showtime’s hit series “Dexter” are again opening up on what fans may expect from it once season 5 premieres this September. Of course, as E! Online also points out, one of the most burning question is how Rita will make an appearance in the first two episodes if she’s dead and, after that, how all the actors guest starring in season 5 fit in the larger picture.

It all falls into place, showrunner Sara Colleton assures fans at a press event where E! was also present. The story line will not make great leaps or take weird turns, just like it hasn’t these past 4 seasons either. However, the theme of the upcoming one will be atonement, Colleton says – which is also what will allow the introduction of so many new faces, including John Lee Miller and Julia Stiles, as we also reported a while back.

“As [Dexter] is going through different stages of grief, he doesn’t know what he’s feeling, and there will be different characters that’ll come in and interact, [and] along the way help him... [atone]. The central idea of Dexter is so strong and so provocative, we feel there is a new human territory to push Dexter through that minefield. Whether he will get caught is what brings the audience to us. [The season 4 to season 5 transition] has been about as seamless as it can be,” Colleton says about the events that will unfold after Rita’s tragic and unexpected death at the end of season 4.

Other two story lines that the show will focus on this fall include Quinn and, of course, Deb. Executive producer Chip Johannessen assures fans that season 5 will not mirror the events in season 2 when Doakes seemed to come very close to finding out Dexter’s biggest secret. Quinn, for one, has more facts to go on that just his intuition to go on, which actually makes him quite a worthy adversary. “It’s going to look a lot different, because he has actual information. [Quinn] isn’t a bull in a china shop, he’s in the bullpen. [But] he’s going to have a much more difficult time pushing forward with this investigation,” Johannessen explains.

As for Deb, she too will find herself in a position she’s never been before, having to deal with her brother’s admission of killing Rita and the pain of losing her sister in law. As Jennifer Carpenter puts it, Deb will learn to compartmentalize and to deal with everything by burying herself in her work. For more on season 5 spoilers, please refer here.
