At the beginning of March, actress Milla Jovovich announced that “Resident Evil” fans in the US would get their chance to have a first look at how the fourth film in the franchise would turn out to be, as the trailer would premiere with the rebooted “Nightmare on Elm Street.” Fans abroad have had to wait until now for the trailer – but they also get a couple of stills from the movie as well, as Examiner can confirm.

“Resident Evil: Afterlife,” or RE4 for those familiar with the franchise, will clearly mark a departure from the previous three films, in both approach and tone. For starters, the latest installment, out in September 2010, will come in 3D – using the same technology employed by Oscar-winning director James Cameron in the biggest motion picture ever to be made, “Avatar.” As the trailer below also shows, this will translate into less of a gritty atmosphere, where the focus falls on action and movement.

“The last time we saw Alice, she wasn’t sipping tea beside the Mad Hatter. Not the Alice horror fans have come to know. No, the Alice I am talking about discovered she was more than human. That she was one of many, and that if she was to rid the world of the evil Umbrella Corp and the Zombie Apocalypse they helped to create, she had to use her abilities, and she had to rebuild her team. Resident Evil: Afterlife picks up with Alice (Milla Jovovich) and Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) in a battle to take down the Umbrella Corp and save Claire’s brother, while going up against all new enemies. Forget Zombies, and this film has plenty. But this time around the bad guys sprout tentacles from their mouths and fight with massive swords,” Examiner says of the trailer.

Indeed, the zombies too have undergone a visible change, with many fans noticing that the most important is that that they seem to have decreased in numbers, while they’ve become more dangerous. “If the fighting sequences aren’t enough to catch your attention, then the state-of-the-art 3-D technology created by and made famous by James Cameron himself, is utilized to full effect. The look of this latest Resident Evil film is nothing less than a smorgasbord of action, girl power and monsters. Zombie film fans should be pleased,” the mag goes on to say about the upcoming film.

All in all, while RE4 appears to forgo certain elements fans have become accustomed to (the gritty atmosphere being just one of the many things that come to mind), it also seems to compensate with countless surprises. Below is the first trailer, watch and see for yourselves if what they say in the blogosphere about “Afterlife” being another kettle of fish is accurate or not. Enjoy.
