Square Enix has announced at an event that the video game formerly known as Final Fantasy Agito XIII is now officially renamed to Final Fantasy Type 0, using a trademark that was initially registered a few weeks ago and that many fans thought to be linked with an entirely new video game in the long-running franchise.

The game is set to be launched exclusively on the PlayStation Portable from Sony at some point during the summer, although a clear date was not offered.

It's not clear whether Square Enix is interested in doing the work needed to also launch Final Fantasy Type 0 in North America and in Europe.

The company has disclosed that the new game will be launched using two UMDs and is part of the overall Fabula Nova Crystallis game space.

Square Enix has also registered trademarks for the names Type 1, 2 and 3 which might mean that the company is planning to make the new game the first of a series.

Type 0 will be set inside the Peristerium School of Magic, with the player able to control a number of students as they develop their powers and begin to explore the world around the school.

The plot will be linked to the Cid of Milites, who wants to conquer the countries around him, and the developers are saying that they will explore themes like the power of magic versus normal weapons and the way different fantasy worlds interact with one another.

Square Enix has also revealed that it is working on Final Fantasy XIII-2, a game which will use the same game world as the original but will offer a new story, a revamped combat system and new game mechanics.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be launched on the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 at some point during the coming winter season.
