Final Cut Server, Apple's server-based backend for managing Final Cut Pro files and workflow automation, has received a new update enhancing the compatibility, stability and over behavior of the software on the Mac. The update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Server 1.5, according to Apple.

Final Cut Server is based on Proximity's artbox package. The software can catalogue any file type allowing for the addition of custom metadata to make those files searchable. Running on Apple hardware, while the server is accessed through a Java client that can run on both PCs and Macs, Final Cut Server makes heavy use of the QuickTime framework and requires its installation when used with PC clients, in addition to Java.

According to the latest Support note posted by Apple on the matter, Final Cut Server 1.5.1 is a mere revision to Final Cut Server 1.5. “This update addresses general compatibility issues, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues. This update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Server 1.5,” the company says. Issues addressed in this update are then listed as follows:

- Fixes possible slowdown in the check-in and check-out process - Fixes status display in Downloads & Uploads window - Locked assets are now skipped in the archive process - Fixes archiving and restore for bundle assets - Improves reliability of adding and removing archive devices

The Cupertino-based Mac maker explains that users can get even more information on the changes delivered with Final Cut Server 1.5.1 by accessing the application’s Help menu for the complete release notes.

Minimum requirements for Final Cut Server, and the new 1.5.1 version implicitly, are a Mac computer with an Intel processor, 2GB of RAM (4GB of RAM recommended), ATI or NVIDIA graphics (integrated Intel graphics processors not supported), Mac OS X v10.5.8 (Leopard) or later, Compressor 3.5.1 (included with Pro Applications Update 2009-01), QuickTime 7.6.2 or later, an optical / DVD drive for installation, as well as 1.5GB of disk space for all the included applications.
