Far Cry 3 has a full-fledged cooperative campaign and its story will also approach themes like insanity, just like the actual single-player mode, according to developer Ubisoft Massive.

Far Cry 3 is set to deliver a pretty intriguing first-person shooter experience, as it focuses not just on shooting enemies around a gorgeous tropical island, but also on distinct themes like insanity and doing whatever it takes to survive in a harsh environment.

We already heard a lot about the single-player campaign and its savage characters that were developed by Ubisoft Montreal, but the studio in charge for the co-op mode, Ubisoft Massive, emphasizes that the same feel has been carried over into the cooperative experience.

“It's a different story but what it does bring is the same insanity. These four characters are working on a seedy private cruise ship, there's drugs and prostitution, these guys are down on their luck, they've hit rock bottom, looking for a chance to get out,” Creative Director Magnus Jensen told CVG.

What’s more, Ubisoft Massive won’t portray this special story through cut-scenes, as everything will be told through in-game dialog.

“Our four characters are interesting because you get to think about what it is in their background that can make them snap like this? Why are they working there? We don't reveal the answers through long cutscenes, we've woven it into the in-game dialog. We're super-proud of that co-op and what we've done with it.”

The cooperative campaign in Far Cry 3 focuses on a group of four characters that were on a cruise ship, then sold by its captain to Vaas, one of the mercenaries from the single-player campaign. As you can imagine, they don’t take this lying down and have decided to search for the captain and make him pay.

“The co-op is a full, custom-made campaign. You're not replaying snippets of the single-player campaign that just happened to fit. It has its own story and characters. It takes place six months before, it has ties into the main story in that you'll meet various factions and you're on a different part of the same island,” Jensen added.

“Vaas and the pirates make a deal with the captain, board the ship and the captain takes off, so they're betrayed and sort of snap. They decided to go after the captain and chase him across the island. There's a lot of bloodshed.”

Far Cry 3 is out in December for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
