Electronic Arts has announced that Playfish, the social gaming developer it bought last year, is working on a new title called FIFA Superstars, set to be launched on Facebook and allowing players to connect with their friends while experiencing the magic of the beautiful game. Expect it to be outed at some point during the upcoming 2010 South Africa FIFA World Cup.

The official announcement does not say a lot about what the game will be centered around and how it will use the social network in order to keep players interested and persuade them to also attract their friends to FIFA Superstars.

Playfish has quite a bit of experience in creating Facebook titles, with Pet Society now having more than 17 million monthly active users. Electronic Arts is probably hoping for a similar level of success for FIFA Superstars, considering the 300 million dollars it paid for Playfish.

Quickly after the deal between Playfish and Electronic Arts was announced, its president, Kristian Segerstrale, talked about working with one of the big franchises of the publisher. Now, Peter Moore, who is the president of EA Sports, stated on his official blog, “Our FIFA products connect fans from all over the world who share a common passion for the sport, and soon our partnership with Playfish will allow us to bring the FIFA brand to the growing Facebook community with a new game called FIFA Superstars.”

EA Sports has just launched a videogame dedicated to the 2010 World Cup, allowing the player to lead any nation to the final tournament, and also plans to launch a free-to-play FIFA Online, with the stated aim being to draw in a wider audience for one of its biggest franchises. A FIFA 11 is also in the works and will arrive at some point during the fall.
