Legendary blues singer Etta James has lost the battle against leukemia. She died in a Riverside, California hospital aged 73, just days from turning 74, surrounded by her family and the closest friends.

News comes from James' longtime friend and manager for 30 years, Lupe de Leon, who confirms it for CNN in a brief statement.

“This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world. She was a true original who could sing it all – her music defied category,” de Leon says.

“I worked with Etta for over 30 years. She was my friend and I will miss her always,” the singer's manager further says.

Etta was diagnosed with leukemia in 2012, but she was already suffering from dementia and hepatitis C.

However, it wasn't until just recently that fans learned of her true condition, when her manager issued a statement to say she was “terminally ill” and to ask them to pray for her, as we also reported at the time.

De Leon also stressed that it was only a matter of time, saying “we're just waiting.”

The singer died surrounded by her family, her husband and two sons.

News of her passing spread like wildfire in online communities in just a matter of minutes, with celebrities not missing a second to send their best thoughts and most sincere condolences to the family.

Most notably, Beyonce, who has been keeping a very low profile since giving birth and who played Etta in the film “Cadillac Records,” issued a statement to say the loss is unspeakably large – but Etta's memory and legacy will live on for ever.

“This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen. Her musical contributions will last a lifetime. Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist,” Beyonce says.

“When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed,” the singer adds.
