Launched one month ago by Verizon Wireless carrier, Motorola DROID 2 has been rooted by the end of August and is now getting the first custom ROM. Developed by user Matt4542, Epic Unleashed is specifically designed for DROID 2 and will not work on DROID 1

The custom ROM is still work in progress, but already reached version 1.1, which fixes more bugs that were discovered after the initial release on September 4.

The main features of the new ROM include: Removes Verizon Wireless bloatware, Adds scripts, Many build.prop mods. The custom ROM still has MOTOBLUR UI, as well a few annoying bugs.

Some of the them are already known, like the fact that the backlight won't turn off when users are locking the device, the screen is on but black. Also the keyboard is not working that well.

Even thought the developer released Epic Unleashed 1.1, which fixes a few of these bugs, it seems that the .zip file uploaded on the server is not working and cannot be installed for the moment.

Anyway, here is what the latest update does: Major bug fixes; Screen turns off; Keyboard works; Wifi may work (untested); Accelerometer works.

To install the custom ROM you need a rooted DROID 2 and Koush's Bootstrap application, that will help you make a full nandroid backup before flashing your smartphone.

Since the developer didn't signed the package in the initial release of the ROM, you will need to toggle off manually the signature authentication. Be advised and do not install this using ROM Manager app.

For a step by step guide on how to install the custom ROM check this XDA forum thread.

You can download Epic Unleashed 1.0 here, and you could also try getting the 1.1 update here.

If you successfully install Epic Unleash you are welcome to report any bugs found, on the ROM's forum topic.
