Wireless carrier Verizon Wireles was recently rumored to plan the release of at least two new handsets in the DROID series of phones, including the DROID Pro and the DROID 2 World Edition, both delivered by Motorola, but it seems that things might turn out otherwise.

Some previous rumors on these two devices suggested at one pointed that they might get launched as the same Android-based mobile phone, and new more proof of this state of facts emerged.

According to a recent article on Engadget, the DROID Pro should indeed be released on shelves as the dual-mode version of the DROID 2.

A source with the wireless carrier reportedly confirmed that Verizon is not set to launch a highly-spec'd Android-based device in the DROID family before the end of the ongoing year, which turns DROID Pro in nothing more than a rumor.

Basically, this means that only one upcoming DROID handset should arrive at Verizon Wireless, and that this would be the DROID 2 World Edition, though there are no details available on the name under which it would be released on the market.

However, the upcoming launch of a new DROID successor with higher specifications on board won't pan out, it seems, at least this is what Verizon's 2010 phone roadmap shows according to Engadget's source.

On the other hand, the one mystery that needs to be solved is related to the emergence of two codenames in Verizon's internal systems, both pointing at Motorola devices, namely A956 and A957.

Since DROID 2 sports model number A955, the said A956 and A957 models were expected to turn into DROID Pro and DROID 2 World Edition.

But with one of them out of the equation, it remains to be seen what the codename would stand for.

Most probably, this would be the R2-D2 version of the DROID 2 that Verizon and Motorola announced a while ago, though we'll have to wait for it to land to learn more info on the matter.
