Although it arrived on shelves only a few weeks ago, the Motorola DROID 2 is already tasting its first over-the-air software update at Verizon Wireless.

According to the mobile phone carrier, the new software solution for the Android-based device is meant to bring forth a series of performance enhancements, along with some fixes and improvements.

“Enjoy improved performance with these OS enhancements. Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update for your Motorola Droid 2. The Motorola (Version.2.2.20.A955.Verizon.en.US/BP: BP_C_01.09.05P) update includes numerous enhancements and improvements,” the carrier notes on its website.

All in all, this is only a minor update for the Motorola DROID 2, though it seems that both Verizon and Motorola are encouraging handset owners to download and install it.

Among what has been included in the software update, we can count: - Enabled text and picture message scrolling. - Streamlined set up of Visual Voice Mail feature. - Improved contact sync with Corporate Exchange categories and groups. - View accurate contact pictures when reviewing Recent Call Log.

As it always happens with this type of software updates, users should receive notifications as soon as the solution is available for download on their devices.

However, in case some would like to download the update but were not announced on its availability, they can check of it manually by heading to Settings, About Phone, System Updates, where they need to hit Download.

The Motorola DROID 2 is the direct successor of DROID by Motorola, and it makes sense that Verizon is interested in enhancing the experience this handset can offer to its users.

However, some of Big Red's customers would certainly appreciate it if the carrier would push out a software update for another Android-based device, the DROID X by Motorola, which is currently awaiting for an Android 2.2 Froyo upgrade to land on it.

Those DROID 2 owners interested in learning more info on the new software update for their devices should head over to the carrier's website here.
