Fitness titles are slowly becoming the hottest trend in the gaming industry as Nintendo has paved the way for games that make people get up and start doing exercises in front of the TV thanks to its hugely successful Wii Fit.

In response to that, Electronic Arts has launched, through its Sports label, a new Wii exclusive in the form of EA Sports Active, which aims at bringing players a fitness experience more accustomed to the western audience, as opposed to the Asian-oriented one from Wii Fit.

Launched on May 19, the game is enjoying huge popularity, as EA revealed that it sold over 600,000 copies in two weeks. In order to generate even more hype around it, the president of EA Sports, Peter Moore, declared that an expansion pack for the title was being worked on.

Set to support more challenges and fresh workouts, this expansion will bring 30 brand new activities and exercises that will get the player's upper and lower body in motion, as well as cardio workouts. It will also emphasize the importance of core exercises like curl ups or crunch and punches and will have a warm up/cool down routine.

“We're delighted by the overwhelming response to EA Sports Active," said Moore. “This is, by far, the most successful launch of any Wii title in EA history, and even more encouraging is that our second week sales worldwide were as strong as our first week. Not only are we off to a great start at retail, but the feedback from people who are getting off the couch, breaking a sweat and using EA Sports Active to support living a healthier lifestyle, is that it is changing their lives.”

Look forward to this expansion pack towards the end of the year, but until then, you can enjoy the many exercises and great experience of the normal EA Sports Active game only on the Nintendo Wii.
