Activision and MTV Games are battling hard to win over new players for their Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchises and one of the most effective tools are downloadable song packs which feature highly rated bands.

Harmonix is now saying that it plans to release, for those playing both Rock Band and Rock Band 2 on the Xbox 360 or on the PlayStation 3, a track pack which will feature the biggest grunge band in the world, Nirvana. There will be seven songs from the band packed in the DLC: “Breed”, “Lounge Act”, “On a Plain”, “Polly”, “Something in the Way”, “Stay Away” and “Territorial Pissings”. If you plan to get just one of the tracks, then you’ll have to pay 190 Microsoft Points or 1.99 dollars, while the whole pack will cost 880 Microsoft Points or 10.99 $.

Harmonix points out that a Nirvana track is already featured in both Rock Band and its sequel, which means their fans can now play through nine of their songs.

Meanwhile, Activision is also saying that it plans to release the entire Oasis album Dig Out Your Soul for its upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour sometime around the beginning of 2009. But Oasis fans will have a chance to play some of their tracks much sooner. On November 6, the Oasis Track Pack will arrive for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, featuring songs like “Bag it Up”, “Waiting for the Rapture” and “ The Shock of the Lightning” from the new album of the band.

It’s good to see how the strong competition between Rock Band and Guitar Hero is resulting in more and better content for gamers. It will be interesting to see what impact Guitar Hero: World Tour will have once it is launched.
