SeaMonkey 2.2, the all-in-one internet suite from Mozilla, has been released and is now available for download. The latest version comes with a number of improvements and new features and is based on the latest Gecko 5, the same engine that powers Firefox 5.

This explains all of the similarities and the fact that many of the new features are the same from the latest Firefox, they share the same core technology.

"The SeaMonkey project is proud to present SeaMonkey 2.2: The new major release of the all-in-one Internet suite is available for download now!," SeaMonkey developers announced.

"Building on the same Mozilla platform as the newest Firefox release, it delivers the latest developments in web technologies such as HTML5, hardware acceleration and improved JavaScript speed," they added.

Some of the highlights of SeaMonkey 2.2 include:

· Added support for CSS animations; · Tuned HTTP idle connection logic for increased performance; · Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance; · Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas; · Improved spell checking for some locales; · WebGL content can no longer load cross-domain textures; · Background tabs have setTimeout and setInterval clamped to 1000ms to improve performance;

Needless to say, SeaMonkey 2.2 fixes several stability and several security issues as well. Some usability issues remaining from the previous release have also been fixed, the team said.

Perhaps the most remarkable fact about SeaMonkey 2.2 is that it comes less than a month after SeaMonkey 2.1. This explains the relatively few changes to the suite itself, most of the work was done on adapting the Gecko 5 engine for SeaMonkey.
