LimeWire is a free peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing client for Mac OS X. It uses the Java platform to locate files, as well as share files and it is one of the only P2P file sharing solutions of its kind for the Mac.

Touted as the fastest, easiest, most advanced file sharing program of its kind, Limewire is compatible with all major platforms and running over the Gnutella network. The developers were keen on including iTunes integration on both Mac and Windows platforms, as well as a browse-host feature, which works even through firewalls. It connects to the network using GWebCache, a distributed connection system. As usual, with a newer version of the software, improvements and new features are to be had.

One new addition in LimeWire 5.0.9 Beta is the ability to limit the number of browse requests for a friend's library. BitTorrent exception fixes have been included, as well as various bug fixes. Listed below is the lot, according to the 5.0.9 Beta changelog:

· Fixed a bug where MagnetDownloaderImpl discards a known file size when creating URLRemotFileDescs which causes unnecessary HEAD lookups · Fixed a bug where all meta data for non audio files wasn't being written to disk for downloads · Fixed a bug routing messages over UDP · Fixed a bug where you could be banned from downloads from a friend · Fixed a bug where you could be infinitely connecting to a host which would spike your CPU usage.

Freely available to the public, LimeWire's open source code was developed (in part) by a devoted programmer community. LimeWire is available in multiple languages, in both free and paid versions. The Basic version is free, while LimeWire Pro can be acquired for $21.95. Needless to point out, LimeWire Pro offers personalized technical support and more stuff typical to a an enhanced version.

Requirements include Mac OS X 10.4 or later, 256 MB RAM, a live connection to the Internet, and Java 1.5 or later. To download LimeWire for free, or to grab the Pro version, use the link below. Besides the latest (beta) version of LimeWire, a link to the latest stable version is also provided.
