Karen Grunberg, of the Google Chrome team, has posted an update on the Google Chrome Releases site signaling that the Dev channel has been updated to 5.0.342.3 for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. Google Chrome is a lightweight web browser based on the WebKit layout engine and application framework.

“The Dev channel has been updated to 5.0.342.3 for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms,” Grunberg writes. “This release improves stability and fixes some known crashers,” Google’s staffer adds. Grunberg then proceeds to list the known issues still plaguing current Chrome builds.

For all platforms, form auto-fill is still not enabled by default, although it has been fixed on Trunk, according to her. On the Windows front, the browser crashes on quitting when the Authentication dialog is opened. This issue is also fixed on Trunk, the changelog says. Finally, a Linux-only issue is the “Chromium Bookmark Sync Not Working.” Grunberg directs those who need more details about additional changes to the svn log of all revisions.

As noted in many of our previous reports, in addition to developing the Chrome web browser for Mac, Windows and Linux, Google is also working on an Internet-oriented operating system bearing the Chrome label. Appropriately dubbed Chrome OS, the operating system will feature key aspects like speed, simplicity, and security, according to Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management at Google. With the now-confirmed Apple iPad, many believe it will be a direct rival of the enhanced iPhone operating system employed by the tablet device.

The latest version of the browser can be downloaded by using the link below. Chrome for Mac works on Intel machines only, and requires Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later. The Mac version of the browser is still beta software, therefore users are advised to exercise caution when utilizing the browser, or at least not rely on it for important tasks.
