Lost in no man's land

Everyone thought that the Doom movie was a flop. Most of those who played Doom 3 said it was a good shooter which, while offering the scares and demons the series is known for, didn't impress at all.

So, the Doom franchise really needs to draw fans back in and id Software, the developer of the series, is betting that Doom 4 will be the game to do that.

Todd Hollenshead, who is the Chief Executive Officer of id Software, delivered quite a few puzzling statements related to the game while talking to GameSpot. He said that “It's not a sequel to Doom 3, but it's not a reboot either. Doom 3 was sort of a reboot. It's a little bit different than those, and if I told you why, I would get my […] kicked when I got back. So I'll just have to leave it at that.”

The videogame is still in the early stages of development but it's apparently “classic Doom.” We just hope that this “not a sequel, not a reboot” game brings back the floating heads that plagued players in the original Doom.

Before we see Doom 4 being released, id Software is working hard on three other projects. It has released the beta version of Quake Live, which is free to play and Internet-based. Development work is continuing on it in order to create a final version, set to be ad-supported and released towards the end of the year.

The company is also working on a new Wolfenstein game, which should be shown at this year's E3, and there is work also being done on Rage, a post apocalyptic shooter that features a lot of driving and some role playing aspects, which should arrive sometime towards the beginning of 2010.
