Fantasy or sci fi?

Graham Joyce, a well known English novelist specialized in a cross among horror, fantasy and sci fi, has been named by id Software in charge of the script of Doom 4, the next installment in the series that defined and then re-defined the way we look at the first person view, demons and shooters.

Graham Joyce has a reputation of being a very serious writer. He has published 26 short stories and 14 novels and received four British Fantasy Awards, an Imaginaire Award and a World Fantasy Award, with three of his works having been picked up to be turned into movies. His most recent award was for the novel The Facts of Life in 2003.

United Kingdom based site CVG has contacted Graham Joyce to talk about id's announcement and the author stated that “I can say that Id have hired me to help develop the storyline potential.” It's not clear whether he is going to write the script himself or whether he'll only be advising on it.

Todd Hollenshead, who is the Chief Executive Officer of id Software, has recently said that Doom 4 would be a faithful continuation of the main themes of the series, adding that “There will be guns, blood, demons, and gibs.” It's nice to see that visceral action and a lot of demonic enemies are high on id's list of priorities but we'd like to have more details about the game set to bear the name of the founder of the first person shooter genre.

Doom 4 does not have a release window yet and it's thought that the game would share the new id Tech 5 graphics engine with the other project id has in development, called Rage. The game is expected to arrive on the PC, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony.
