Summit Entertainment gets “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon to helm final two “Twilight” films, says report

“Twilight” fans are having a very good time right now, what with several developments to the franchise occurring these past few weeks, like the release of an “Eclipse” spinoff book, the announcement that Stephenie Meyer’s “The Host” will also be turned into a film and the nearing release of the third installment of the franchise, “Eclipse.” For those fans who still can’t get enough of the Twilight mania, there’s even more good news, with a director for the last two films in the series having been found in the person of Bill Condon, Entertainment Weekly informs.

However, the first really exciting piece of news is that Summit Entertainment, the movie studio behind the Twilight madness, has finally decided on splitting the final book in the series, “Breaking Dawn,” into two movies, as speculation also had it earlier. One film will reportedly focus on Bella Swan’s (Kristen Stewart) wedding, marriage and pregnancy, while the second one will present her transition from mortal to vampire. Even better, a director has been found in the person of Oscar-winning Bill Condon.

“Sources confirm that Bill Condon is in negotiations to direct Breaking Dawn, which Summit Entertainment now plans to break into two films. Over the last month, the studio met with a high-caliber group of directors that also included Milk director Gus Van Sant and Mean Girls’ director Mark Waters. Sofia Coppola expressed huge interest in the franchise but dropped out after revealing that she only wanted to direct one of the two films. Condon, Van Sant, and Waters met both with Summit and Twilight author Stephenie Meyer,” EW says.

“If all works as planned, Condon will spend the next year in Vancouver shooting Breaking Dawn. The studio has not yet confirmed the news, nor will they reveal their release plans for the films. In terms of how the movies will be split, sources tell EW that the wedding, honeymoon, Bella’s pregnancy, and the birth will all be told in the first movie, while part two will focus on Bella’s transformation into a vampire and Jacob’s relationship with Renesmee Cullen,” the same publication goes on to say.

Considered the most challenging book in terms of turning it into a film mostly because of the scenes depicting Bella giving birth, and her death as a mortal and subsequent transformation into a vampire, “Breaking Dawn” is the only project in the franchise subject to this much speculation. Be that as it may, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who also handled script duties on the other three films, says fans should not worry about the film(s) delivering: it (they) will remain true to the book, so if they loved the novel, they will also love the adaptation(s).
