Only now is Sony showing off its system's truly impressive capabilities

Sony Computer Entertainment Marketing Manager in New Zealand, Warwick Light has just unveiled "Sony's intentions to turn the PS3 into a digital video recorder," as Engadget.com reports. Warwick Light told New Zealand's The Press the following: "We're also hoping next year - about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March) - to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder."

Of course, your nest question would be: "and what are we supposed to store everything on?" given that 60-80GB of HDD space isn't enough for games and HD recorded content. Heck, not even that rumored 120GB PS3 is the likely solution. Oh well, guess it's less HD and more... normal content that you'll be recording. What, regular DVD quality doesn't do it for you anymore?

So, did your jaw drop? Well, it should you know because Sony's not only really starting to show what the PS3 can do, but they're going to cut its price (again) soon, making it much more affordable to those who see more than just games in it.

But still, what's Sony going to do about the disk space. Really now, do you honestly think they'd go and make such announcements if they hadn't already thought it out? Not likely. I'd say Sony already has a new PS3 in the works, sporting a bigger hard drive unit. It's either that or they're just going to have to release a standalone unit, which quite frankly, no one finds very attractive. Besides, that's why people buy the PS3 - because they get everything bundled inside, Blu-ray playing unit and all...

But it's only a matter of time before Sony makes the big announcement. They've tried everything and the PS3 still doesn't sell too good. Once they drop a bombshell saying "double the disk space" or "half the original price," we're going to witness a new era of home entertainment. Just wait and see?
