Video game developer Bungie says that it has used some other open world titles, like Far Cry from Ubisoft and Borderlands from Gearbox, as sources of inspiration for its new Destiny, aiming to improve on its core features.

Joe Staten, the creative director working on the shooter, tells Edge that, “We would be idiots if we didn’t look at an awesome game like Borderlands and ask, ‘What are they doing well and how can we try to hit that same ball?’ I have never played a game where I have such a great attachment to my gun as I do in Borderlands.”

The developer says that the Gearbox title allows players to quickly group with friends, explore the world and battle enemies, but Destiny is taking the experience one step further by allowing two teams of gamers to meet and interact.

Staten adds, “We don’t do that just once or twice in the game, we do that all the time, everywhere. You see other people on the horizon, hear gunfire over a hill and see space magic flying behind some trees, and you know… there are other people out here.”

Bungie is focused on explaining the enhanced experience that players will get from grouping with other gamers in Destiny, but the team also says that fans are free to play through the entire game solo.

The new Bungie game uses the shooter mechanics that the team that created Halo is known for, but adds a multiplayer and social layer on top.

Players will have to roam the galaxy in order to make sure that the final city on Earth, protected by a mysterious alien, remains safe and has the resources to evolve.

Destiny will be launched in 2014 and will be offered on the Xbox One from Microsoft, the PlayStation 4 from Sony and current-generation consoles.
