Dead Space 2, the space-based third-person shooter from developer Visceral and publisher Electronic Arts, has managed to take the first position in the United Kingdom video game chart, demonstrating that a solid and innovative sequel has the ability to outperform the original on which it was based.

Dead Space 2 is the first big multiplatform release of the year and we reviewed it favorably on Softpedia.

Second place in the chart went to another title launched during this year, Little Big Planet 2 from developer Media Molecule and publisher Sony, showing that after just one rather slow month for big games 2011 is ready to step forward, with important games coming all through the end of February and early March.

Third place went to FIFA 11 from EA Sports, which managed to get up one place to the space where Just Dance 2 previously resided.

Fourth place went to Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the latest Ezio featuring adventure from Ubisoft, which also gained one place this week.

Call of Duty: Black Ops, the first-person shooter from Treyarch and Activision, has lost three places to end up in fifth, but a bounce is to be expected when the first map pack, First Strike, arrives this week.

Just Dance 2 is in sixth place, down from third, while Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit from Criterion and Electronic Arts has gained three places to reach seventh, just as its racing rival Gran Turismo 5 from Polyphony Digital and Sony is nowhere to be seen in the top ten.

Wii Fit Plus is slowly dropping places, this week coming in at eight, followed by Art Academy, also from Nintendo, with the first Just Dance bringing up the rear of the top ten.

Kinect Sports is out of the top ten in the United Kingdom, as is Mass Effect 2, which saw a surge based on the launch for the PlayStation 3 platform.
