Video game publisher THQ has confirmed that a new Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War III title is under development, saying that the team working on it aims to preserve some of the elements from the two already launched installments while adding new elements that will surprise the player base.

Danny Bilson, who is an executive in charge of core games development at THQ, has told Eurogamer that, “We're working on the next-generation of that franchise right now. I feel like an ass saying it's fantastic, but it is. And we're going to do something with it you haven't seen before.”

He added, “Preserving some things that have always been great about the first two generations of it, going back to 1 on some things, 2 on some things, and 3 will bring us some new things.”

He also promised that gamers will be impressed when they see what the game has to offer, even if it is early in the development process.

The studio working on Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III is still Relic.

He also says that players will get access to more strategic options and that the state of all-out war in the Imperium of Man will be better detailed, with the tactical engagements affecting the overall state of the world.

Bilson also said that some elements of the game are similar to mechanics from MMO titles, which might mean that the campaigns of several players could be somehow linked together.

No launch date for Dawn of War III was talked about and Bilson says that the game will arrive between 18 and 24 months after the launch of the latest Retribution package, which means summer of 2012 at the earliest.

THQ has already said that it plans to unveil a whole new game at the upcoming Gamescom trade event in Germany and Dawn of War III might be that game.
